Setting up Email securely

Email is not private. Don’t forget that ever.  Unencrypted connections are far too easily eavesdropped. On the other hand, it’s worth remembering that SSL only gets your login and email encrypted between your computer and your smtp server.

Having said that, the exact instructions will depend on your email client.

General instructions for secure email at GreenHostIt.com -

  1. enable SSL in your email client
  2. mail server is yourdomain.com
  3. username is you@yourdomain.com
  4. password should be 12 characters and include numbers and letters
  5. in a pinch webmail is at http://yourdomain.com/webmail
  6. IMAP should be on port 995, POP should be on port 993

To use the shared SSL certificate that comes with your web hosting account, you will need to use this as the mail server: https://yourservername.greenhostit.com/~domain username.

ACCESS WEBMAIL SECURELY:

The secure webmail port is 2096, so https://redwood.greenhostit.com:2096/ will allow secure access to webmail.  (If your hosted on a different server, substitute "redwood" for the name of your server, which you can find in your cPanel control panel on the left hand "summary" side of the screen).
